Distribution Recommendations

Choose a distribution based on your needs.

To run ROS1, install Ubuntu 20.04 (recommended).

To run ROS2, install Ubuntu 22.04 (recommended) or 24.04.

If you want to tinker, I recommend Fedora. You can run ROS1 and ROS2 using Docker (not recommended for beginners).

This tutorial will cover the configuration of both the Debian-based and Red Hat-based families.

Most tutorials in the Debian series use Ubuntu as an example.

Most of this tutorial uses Fedora as an example for Red Hat-based systems.
